The Gonz rollin in the Gladiator!
THE GONZ .
Interview by Mike Ardelean.
Intro and photos by Rich Hirsch
Intro:

Besides countless memorable video appearances my first gonz experience was at the 98 x games. I was sitting in the stands mesmerized by the gnarfest and out of the corner of the course comes a dude pedaling across the course at the wallride, this guy was in shorts with no shirt on and no helmet so it was obvious he didn't belong. He dodges security and random pros and launches a wallride to flip fakie perfectly with a failed rollback due to an exploded rear wheel. What I'm getting at here is that the gonz is equal parts crazy mexican and dope rider. I never met him until a few days ago and was definitely not let down. He showed up in a van that he lives in called the gladiator and what you can't tell in the photos is that he basically seasoning those drums performing some sort of interpretive dance.
Hey Dude, are we gonna get the real Gonz for this interview? The polite, responsible Gonz that no one knows? Or are we getting Media Gonz?
Yo, man! Why you guys always sweatin’ me and shee-at! I’m an artist—I’ll give whichever Gonz I feel like at the moment. I might wild out! Or I might bless you with some higher-level spiritual knowledge.
Could we settle on a 50/50 split between the two Gonzes?
Well, since I haven’t taken my anti-schizophrenia pills yet, we most likely will get two versions of the Gonz whether we like it or not…and if we behave kids…maybe...just maybe our good friend Pepe Santiago might even show up in the middle of this shee-at!!!
We haven’t seen you much lately. Give us an update on the last few years of your life.
Um...well…the thing is I got kinda burned out on BMX there for a minute, ya know...I was just over the whole thing…I didn’t care about it at all. It was a culmination of a lot of little things…like my signature frame never coming to fruition, and not making enough money to pay up my dues at home. Like my parents and my wife were just sweatin’ a dog…plus my beautiful son Arion Isreal Gonzalez had just been born...so I decided to stay home and raise him without the stresses of BMX...fast forward four years later to now… I’m stoked on bikes again…I’m on a cool ass team…Failure Bikes and I’m ready to thrash the streets once again!!!!!
Tell us some things that we might not know about the Pheonix scene. Some pros and cons?
Phoenix is pretty cool sometimes… my crew The Skunk Bros are based out of there…and my kids are there…and there’s nothing like summer night Mexican mushroom drum ceremonies with my brother!!!!
Are you feeling California these days?
Hell yeah mofo! I met this cool ass chick on Myspace.com which is kinda shady but she is actually really kool and the gang. She runs a bachelor party girl company…which rocks…you should check it! Eyecandigirls.com. Also hit me up at Myspace.com/thegonzisqueen…plus there’s like a million tree rides so I’m in love.
So are you drifting now? Tell us about the Gladiator.
Yeah, I’m living the gypsy life right now. It’s in my blood, so it feels nice. I’m ready to live the natural Indian way, back to the natural, back to the mother earth. Reduce the stress and increase the peace!!!!! The gladiator is my secret weapon so I really can’t divulge too much information…or I’ll have to kill you.
Have you checked out Defgrip.com before? I’m assuming the Gladiator is fully equipped with wireless internet, right?
I just found out about it today actually. It sounds great. I’m glad there are people like Rich Hirsch doing cool stuff in the BMX scene...count me in on the revolution!!!!!!!!
Who are some of your favorite riders? Better yet, give us some of your old-school faves. You just told me that Pete Augustin, Brad Blanchard, and Davin “Psycho” Halford are on Failure. Did you have anything to do with that?
My all time favorite is Craig “ Grassroots” Grasso. He is the main influence on my riding ever...also Craig Campbell, Eddie Roman, Pete Augustin,, Ronnie Farmer, Vic Murphy, Dave Voelker, Andy Jenkins, Spike Jonze, R.L. Osborne, etc. As far as me having anything to do with the team, not really...but I’m not complaining.
Now just give us some random wisdom:
Always go with the river of life. Never try to go against the current and never try to go faster than the river!
